I wanted to see how many things Erick Erickson says that I disagree with.
#1 – Be Afraid of “The Left.” In his first paragraph Erickson says, “According to prominent voices on the left, Donald Trump is a fascist. These same voices would then have you believe that you should surrender your guns to Donald Trump’s government. That makes no sense except that the left thinks it will one day be in charge again. And that is exactly why gun control will not happen.”
1 – He says “prominent voices on the left” consider Trump a fascist. Well, Erick, is he a fascist? What prominent voices are you talking about? And, if you don’t think he is a fascist, please provide some examples of fascists. Is Putin a fascist, are the leaders of the Philippines or Turkey fascist.
2 – He says, “The Left” wants you to surrender your guns. OK, I’m on the Left, and I do not want you to “surrender” ALL your guns. I’m not sure I even want you to surrender most of your guns. However, I am in favor of better limits to gun ownership.
3 – He says the reason “The Left” wants you to surrender your guns is they, The Left, are the real fascists, and they, “The Left” want you to surrender your guns so they, “The Left” can impose their fascist desires when they are in power.
#2 – “The political left in the United States, as a movement, has grown increasingly totalitarian. As a movement it believes that you must accept its core beliefs, even if they contradict basic biology and science, and should you reject those beliefs the government can punish you. If you have a belief in God, you are subject to derision and ridicule as the left, itself, tries to rewrite and redefine Christianity with open heretics. A case before the Supreme Court this term pits a cake baker against gay rights activists with an unusual fact pattern. The baker was happy to provide the gay couple a cake. But the baker was not going to custom bake a cake for them. The baker refuses even to make cakes for Halloween, considering it a pagan holiday. He’d have made the gay couple a cake for any reason, but he was not going to custom design a cake for a same-sex wedding any more than he’d make a cake celebrating Halloween.”
1 – Erick says, the left has grown increasingly totalitarian. He says, the left believes you “must accept its core beliefs, if they contradict basic biology and science, and should you reject those beliefs the government can punish you. I need proof that the left has grown more totalitarian. He uses the example of the baker. Ok, someone sued someone for something. That suit is not a Democratic Party platform. If it is, Erick, please point it out to me. In fact, please point to any policy or platform of the left that demonstrates they have “grown increasingly totalitarian.” Erick, would you say, the 1960’s civil rights movement was increasingly totalitarian because the left believed that Blacks and Whites should be allowed to marry, should be allowed to use the same water fountain, bathroom, and/or public pool? Would you say that was “totalitarian” because it was the government telling the community you need to treat blacks similarly to whites? Erick, you use the example simple lawsuit by some extreme individuals, as an example of an increasing totalitarianism. Will I call that example with the Jim Crow Laws, and raise it with forcing people to demonstrate respect for the Flag in a very specific way. (Why does standing, taking your hat off, and putting your hand on your heart demonstrate respect. Only in a totalitarian community are behaviors like this forced.)
2 – Erick says, “If you have a belief in God, you are subject to derision and ridicule as the left, itself, tries to rewrite and redefine Christianity with open heretics.” I’d like Erick to provide any examples of, what he calls “prominent voices on the left” that deride and ridicule a belief in God. Joe Biden??? Obama??? Jimmy Carter? Pelosi?? And, his point that the left is trying to rewrite and redefine Christianity, just does not make sense at all. Unless, Erick believes there is only one way to demonstrate a belief in God and that way is his form or Christianity. If that what he is saying, then who is the “totalitarian” in that case. To me God created great diversity. Just look outside and see all the different kinds of plants and trees. There are big trees and small trees. There are trees that lose their leaves in the winter and those don’t. There are trees that produce fruit and those that don’t. And, most importantly, we see plants evolve. Sometimes we see plants evolve through God’s hands and sometimes we see plants evolve through man’s hands. In either case, I see evidence that God loves diversity and loves change. So, what is wrong with diverse religious behaviors and what is wrong with any of those behaviors evolving over time. Of course, if you believe that a 1st Century text cannot change/evolve then yes, I see Erick’s view. If you believe the Christian bible cannot change, then there is no evolution of faith behavior and anyone, then, that suggest change is evil.
#3 – Erick say’s the left believes, “The bigot must be destroyed.”
1 – My first question for Erick is, are you suggesting the bigot is ok and should be encouraged?
2 – While I could see how a Conservative might think the believes bigots must be destroyed, my thinking is they don’t understand how the Left wants to “destroy” bigotry. I can’t speak for all on the Left, but I can tell you I want bigotry destroyed through education. Now, if you ask should blacks and whites be allowed to marry or drink from the same water fountain, I think yes. And, I think bigots should be forced to accept that. If Erick thinks that people should be allowed to do what they want in terms of public behavior then he cannot have it both ways – bigotry toward gays and blacks and jews is ok, but bigotry against religious fundamentalists is not.
#4 – Erick says, “The left’s cultural over reach from demanding men be admitted to women’s bathrooms to forcing businesses out of business if they don’t provide goods and services to certain weddings has shown the right that there can be no compromise on any issue. The left created an existential crisis for the right’s values, traditions, and faiths. So people on the right are not about to give up arms to a group of people who would gladly and with celebration destroy the lives of their political opponents, who the left increasingly labels as evil.”
1 – The left is not demanding “men” be admitted to women’s bathrooms. That is fear mongering at it worse. Transgender people exist. The left is demanding that transgender people be respected and treated with dignity. I found a few news stories written during the Jim Crow era that argued that letting blacks into white swimming pools or using white bathrooms was, as Erick suggests, “cultural over reach.”
2 – I disagree with the lawsuit against the baker that did not want to create a custom cake. I build websites, and I don’t want to be forced to build a website for people or organizations I don’t agree with. (I don’t understand why anyone would want a baker to create a cake for something the baker did not agree with. Was that the only baker available.)
3 – However, independent of either the bathroom issue or baker issue, Erick, please provide an evidence of “prominent voices on the left” that are not willing to compromise on these or any other issues. It seems to me that religious fundamentalists are the only group that is unwilling to compromise. Are you willing to compromise and find a reasonable middle ground to someone that does not want to provide services to groups they don’t want to?
#5 – Erick says, “The left’s own intolerance and hysterical claims about the right undermine their arguments to moderate and liberal voters who support gun rights and their hysterical rage at the right totally defeats even having a reasonable argument with conservatives who no longer trust them to honestly compromise.
1 – This is a classic straw man argument. Erick, labels the left with an extreme position, extrapolated of various quotes taken out of context, and then uses that to fire up his base to make them afraid of the left.
